A Journey Into the Heart of Cretan Tradition
Experiences
Leave the sea behind for
a day and travel into the mountains of central Crete, where caves hide ancient
secrets, shepherds preserve centuries-old traditions, and olive oil is still
produced with care and respect for the land.
This journey reveals a
quieter side of the island as it is: authentic, timeless, and deeply connected
to nature and local life.
Sfedoni Cave — A Hidden World Beneath the Mountains
Your adventure begins at
Sfedoni Cave, located near the mountain village of Zoniana on the slopes of
Mount Psiloritis.
This impressive cave is
one of the most beautiful and accessible caves in Greece and forms part of the
Psiloritis Natural Park, a UNESCO Global Geopark.
Created over thousands
of years by water slowly shaping the limestone rock, the cave covers an area of
around 3,000 square meters and includes a network of chambers filled with
stalactites, stalagmites, and fascinating natural formations.
During a walk along a
270-meter pathway, visitors explore several of the cave’s chambers, each with
its own unique shapes and colors formed by mineral deposits and underground
water.
Inside, you may notice:
●towering stone columns formed by stalactites and
stalagmites
●natural “cave pearls” created in shallow pools
●glittering crystals of calcium carbonate
reflecting the cave lighting
The cave has long been
known to locals and has even served as a hideout during periods of conflict in
Crete’s history, adding a layer of legend to its natural beauty.
Walking through Sfedoni
feels like stepping into a hidden underground world shaped slowly by time and
nature.
Life in the Mountains — The Shepherd’s House
Experience
After exploring the
cave, the journey continues into the traditional world of the Cretan shepherd.
In the mountains of
Crete, shepherding has always been more than a profession — it is a way of life
that connects people to the land, the animals, and the rhythm of the seasons.
During your visit to a
traditional shepherd’s house, you will experience aspects of everyday mountain
life through hands-on activities and authentic local hospitality.
You may learn about:
●traditional sheep and goat farming
●How local dairy products are prepared
●The role of mountain herbs and wild plants in
Cretan cooking
●the simple architecture and lifestyle of
pastoral homes
You are welcome to taste
authentic homemade food, prepared with local ingredients such as fresh cheese,
bread, olive oil, and herbs from the surrounding hills.
It is a moment to slow
down, share stories, and experience the warmth of true Cretan hospitality.
Paraschakis Olive Mill — The Story of Cretan Olive Oil
The journey continues
with a visit to the family-run Paraschakis Olive Mill in the region of
Mylopotamos.
Olive oil has been at
the heart of Cretan culture for thousands of years, forming the foundation of
the famous Mediterranean diet.
At the Paraschakis Olive
Oil Production Museum and mill, you can discover how olive oil production has
evolved.
The visit introduces
three different stages of olive oil production:
●traditional methods, using manual tools and
animal power
●early mechanical techniques, using
diesel-powered equipment
●modern production, using centrifuge technology
to extract the oil
This comparison allows
visitors to understand how the process has developed while still respecting the
traditions of the land.
The experience usually
ends with a tasting session, where guests can sample high-quality extra virgin
olive oil and learn how to recognize its aromas, flavors, and quality.
A Day of Nature, Tradition, and Taste
This excursion brings
together three essential elements of Cretan culture:
●the natural wonders of the island’s mountains
●The traditional lifestyle of rural Crete
●the flavors and products that define the Cretan
diet
It is an opportunity to
experience a different side of Crete, far from the busy beaches - a day filled
with stories, landscapes, and authentic local encounters.

Kourtaliotis - The Temple of Nature
Expieriences
Somewhere in southern
Crete, a hidden heart waits to be discovered.
An old explorer’s
diary speaks of a secret landscape — a river of palms, ancient paths, sacred
caves, and a gorge where the wind sings through the rocks.
Follow the route.
Read the signs of nature.
And see if you can uncover the Heart of Paradise.
The journey is guided by
the fictional diary of an explorer who decades ago received a mysterious
photograph from a friend participating in excavations at Akrotiri in Santorini.
The image showed a paradise-like landscape: a river surrounded by palm trees
and mythical animals. The archaeologist believed that this landscape existed
somewhere in southern Crete.
Driven by curiosity, the
explorer began a journey across villages, rivers, gorges, and sacred places.
And now it's your turn to do the same.
The Route
1-step: Springs, The Old
Watermill, and Byzantine Churches
The journey begins in Spili,
the historic village that serves as the cultural center of the region. The village sits at the foot of Mount
Vorizi, with impressive cliffs and hiking paths leading to caves, wild
herbs and panoramic views.
Water is the defining element here: springs,
rivers and fountains flow through the village while tall trees create a green
landscape. In the central square stands the famous Kefalovrisi, a row of
25 lion-head fountains from which fresh water flows continuously.
Along the village river
lies a restored traditional watermill, surrounded by plane trees,
myrtle, reeds, and walnut trees.
Spili is also home to
historic churches decorated with 14th-century frescoes, reflecting the
region’s deep religious and Byzantine heritage.
2-step The Secret of Kato Mixorrouma
The next stop is the abandoned
settlement of Kato Mixorrouma, located in a lush valley created by the
Spilianos River.
Cross a restored bridge
and explore a peaceful landscape filled with tall trees, ivy and flowing water.
The village once had no internal streets, and houses were built closely
together, forming a compact traditional settlement. They still keep their
secrets good…
The river environment,
combined with local legends about water spirits and the region’s basket-weaving
tradition, makes this area a place for reflection and connection with nature.
3-step Fratti – A View of Myth
The route continues
toward Fratti, near the entrance of the Kourtaliotis Gorge.
From this point, the
surrounding rock formations begin to reveal shapes that resemble figures from
mythology — as if the mountains themselves are watching the valley below.
4-step Cave Church of Saint Anthony
Near the entrance of the
gorge lies the cave church of Saint Anthony, hidden within the rock and
decorated with old frescoes.
According to the
explorer’s diary, you should pause here before entering the gorge. The place
invites a moment of quiet reflection a
symbolic purification before continuing the journey.
Inside the cave, the
atmosphere feels timeless, where spirituality and nature quietly meet.
5-step Kourtaliotis Gorge
From the church, the
route enters the dramatic Kourtaliotis Gorge, where cliffs rise up to 600
meters high.
The gorge is famous for
the powerful winds that pass through its narrow walls, creating a unique
rattling sound that gave the gorge its name.
Hidden within the gorge
you will discover:
●The chapel of Saint Nicholas Kourtaliotis
●Five natural springs, which legend says appeared when the saint
touched the rock with his hand
●Rare plants and birds, and one of Crete’s few permanent
freshwater river systems
The landscape feels both
wild and sacred.
6-step Preveli Lagoon — The Heart of Paradise
The journey leads to the
breathtaking Preveli Lagoon, where the river meets the deep blue waters of the
Libyan Sea.
The area is famous for
its palm forest of Theophrastus, one of only two native palm species found in
Europe.
Here, you finally
discover the symbol of the journey: a rock formation rising from the sea in the
shape of a heart, known as Glymmenos Volakas. Nearby caves also resemble heart
shapes, reinforcing the feeling that this place truly lies at the heart of the
entire landscape.
According to the
explorer’s diary, this is where earth, sea, and sky meet, creating a place that
inspires reflection, wonder, and discovery.
7-step Preveli Monastery
The journey concludes at
the historic Preveli Monastery, built high above the Libyan Sea.
The monastery complex
includes churches, courtyards, a museum, and workshops that reflect centuries
of monastic life and tradition in southern Crete.
A journey through
nature, history, and hidden stories — leading to the Heart of Paradise in
southern Crete.
